Kaduna State House of Assembly, Northwest Nigeria has promised to ensure the passage of Violence Prohibition Bill before the end of 2018.
Cited as Kaduna State Violence against persons prohibition law , it is to eliminate violence in private and public life, prohibits all forms of violence including physical sexual, psychological and domestic harmful.
It will also check discrimination against persons, and to provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims, and punishment of offenders
The Speaker, Aminu Abdullahi gave this indication during an advocacy visit by an NGO, Gender Awareness Trust in his office.
Aminu said discussions on the private member bill has been ongoing before now and we will ensure its passage within the year.
“Looking at all the cases, violence such as sexual, psychological or domestic are visible to everyone to see and understand that there is crises everywhere we are,”
“As representatives of the people, we will continue to do legislation for the betterment of the people and we will also look at the bills page by page to pick out issues connected with traditions and religion to ensure that clean bill are passed” the speaker”, he said.
The Executive Director of the Gender Awareness Trust, Dr. Lydia Umar said that the NGO has been working since year 2000 to promote and encourage justice for everyone and not only women and children,
“The NGO after working for three years discovered that very often, young boys and girls come to lay complaints of violence, this encouraged us to come up with bill that will become a law to make sure everyone faced with violence gets justice.” she added
She said that the violence prohibition bill has been passed at the federal level during the last administration and ” we know that it will not be applicable to the states, this made us conclude to take it to the state level because it is needed.
“Going through the penal code that was reviewed and amended by the Kaduna Assembly , we have realised that most of the formal complaints we have, have been taken care of and this gladden our hearts but there is need for other areas that have not been captured be included” the executive Director stressed.
