A Non Governmental Organization (NGO), Babbar Mace Counselling Services, on Monday called for more awareness campaigns to sensitise the general public on the ills of sexual abuse including rape now prevalent in the society.
Founder of the organisation, Khadija Sa’ad made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.
She said victims and their family members must be encouraged and given necessary protection to report cases of rape and other abuses to relevant authorities for redress.
“There are wide range of violations of women rights which include trafficking, restrictions in accessing quality education, denial of inheritance, genital mutilation, battery among others.’’
She stressed that enacting laws alone would not end the recurring violence against women without raising awareness for victims to know their rights and channels to pursue in seeking for justice.
Khadija said it was important to address issues of culture and illiteracy limiting the capacities of women to attain their full potentials in life.
“The adolescent girl needs to have a sense of awareness,’’ she stressed, adding that a mechanism must be put in place to engage communities to give girls more chances of progressing in life.
She said that the organisation was set up to assist women in the North to become better role models and mothers.
“It is also to create awareness about the problem of women and girl-child in the society, and on ways to bring about development in our society through shaping public opinion on important of marital issues.’’
She said that the organisation, in collaboration with Tranquility Peace Lyrics, recently gave out awards to 10 female Journalists in Kaduna for their excellent reports on issues related to women and children.
Among those honoured were Hassana Yakubu of the NAN, Maryam Suka of Daily Trust, Vintage Ma’azu, AIT, Maureen Shering of Freedom Radio among others.( NAN)
