Gombe State Northeast Nigeria has achieved tremendous success in the area of girls child education under the Female Teacher Training Scholarship Scheme program introduced in 2014, UNICEF has said.
UNICEF Education Specialist Bauchi field office, Mariyam Bukar Dikwa stated this Thursday at a stakeholders meeting organised by the Fund in collaboration with Gombe State Universal Basic Education Board.
She said the achievement was attained due to the acceptance of the female teachers programme by the state government, community and religious leaders as well as parents.
“With the acceptance by the state government, additional 100 female teachers have been enrolled into the programme. This is increasing the number of female teachers in the state”.
Mariyam Dikwa said the findings in Gombe state on the programme showed that the northern part of the state has low enrolment of girl child in schools than the southern part with a higher enrolment.
In his remark , the Executive Secretary of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Professor Mohammed Gurama Dukku said, the aim of the meeting was to basically disseminate information generated from a report UNICEF conducted last year on girls child education to stakeholders in the sector.
Professor Gurama said the Female Teacher Training Scholarship Scheme has impacted positively on female teachers , particularly those in the rural communities.
