An ecologist, Mr Habib Omotosho, has urged the Federal Government to address the issue of unregulated dump site in the country.

Omotosho, the National Coordinator, Environmental Advancement Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organisation, gave the advice in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to him, dump site closer to residential areas poses environmental and health hazards to the people.

“Dump site closer to residential areas can be a feeding place for dogs and cats apart from rats.

“These pet with rodents can bring diseases with them to nearby homes.

“Respiratory diseases, irritation of the eyes, nose and skin, gastrointestinal problems, allergies and psychological disorder have also been traced to unregulated dump site and indiscriminate waste disposal,” he said.

He said that unregulated dump sites were major problem and threat to the environment, especially to the air that people inhale.

According to him, dumpsites emit obnoxious odors and smoke that cause illness to people living in, around, or closer to them.

“Open dump site in developing urban cities, if uncontrolled, poses major health threat, which affect the landscape of urban cities,” Omotosho said.
