Nigerian Court Slams Surety N5m Bail For Failure To Produce Suspect

Date:

Court 4A Kubwa Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja, Nigeria, Tuesday granted Akinyemi Fawemi N5 million bail over alleged failure to produce a suspect for whom he stood as a surety.

The Judge, Mohammed Marafa, also ordered Fawemi to produce a surety who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

Marafa adjourned the case until May 28 for mention.

The accused, who lives in Kubwa, had pleaded not guilty to a count charge.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Babajide Olanipekun, Fawemi stood as a surety for one Babatolu Sheyi at the Kubwa Police Area Command and promised to produce him when needed, but failed to do so.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 167 of the Penal Code.

Olanipekun said that Mr Abel Behora and Mrs Esther Shallagwa of Gwarinpa, Abuja, had reported a case of breach of trust and cheating against Sheyi on Nov. 18.
