Executive Director, League of Democratic Women, Rebecca Sako-John, has expressed delight with roles played by non-governmental organisations in awakening the consciousness of rural dwellers of their responsibilities especially in electoral process in Kaduna State, Northwest of the country.
Speaking at a -2 day Learning and Sustainability Forum in Kaduna, Rebecca noted that from the assessment and analysis of the participants, rural dwellers were being carried along on issues that have to do with governance and how to present their grievances to the appropriate authorities for necessary actions.
She explained that the programme targeted at women, youth and the disabled was with a view to bringing them on board on the electoral process and demand for their rights as citizens of the state.
She added, “We also seek to ensure women participation in politics so that they could fully participate and be voted for in any elective position. We have engaged communities to draw community charter through which they could prioritise their demands and ensure follow up to their elective representatives or government officials for the citing of projects in their areas.”
Mrs Sako-John explained that the project was coming to an end, stressing that the two day programme was looking at the challenges communities face and how to continue after the project comes to an end with a view to ensuring that participants continue to ensure transparency and accountability in all levels of governance.
Most of the participants expressed delight with the tremendous contributions of the NGO in educating the populace on their roles in governance for better service delivery.
Hajiya Aisha Mohammed from Sabon Gari local government area explained that programme has helped citizens to know their rights on ways to present their grievances to government for the provision of social amenities in their areas.
Also, Mrs Ladi Bonet from Lere local government noted that citizens participation in politics has helped the rural communities to voice out their grievances with a viewing to adhering to them.
A community facilitator from Sanga local government, Muhammad Umar Numbu, stressed the need for citizens to be educated on electoral process, voter registration and how to vote.
Others from Sabon Gari, Zangon Kataf and Kajuru local government areas noted that the project had impacted positively on the rural dwellers of their rights, ensure that government is transparent and accountable to the people.
