Kaduna (Nigeria) – Unidentified gunmen have killed four persons in Bakin Kogi village of Jema’a local government area of Kaduna State, northwest Nigeria.

The victims, according to a source, were palm wine tappers, attacked and killed while returning home from the farm.

Another source who wants remain anonymity told journalists that the incident occurred around 10:00 am local time, when villagers were returning from Sunday worship.

According to him, a woman was critically injured by gunshots and in a hospital in Kafanchan, headquarters of the Local Government Area.

The source alleged that the gunmen were Fulani, who ambushed and killed the four victims.

“We heard gun shots at about 10:00am when we were coming back from the church.

“The victims, four in number, went to tap palm wine. It was on their way back that they were ambushed and killed.

“They died instantly, while a woman was severely injured. She was rushed to a hospital in Kafanchan where she is receiving treatment at the moment.”

A villager who gave his name as James Aboki, alleged that the gunmen invaded the village shooting at anyone in sight, leaving four persons dead and injuring a woman, while several other people ran away to safety.

Bakin Kogi village, where the incident happened, according to the source, is however, calm as people have resumed their normal businesses.

The corpses of the four persons, the source said, have been taken away by the police.

Police spokesman in Kaduna, Mukhtar Aliyu has confirmed the incident, but said he was waiting for full details.

“I am yet to get the report from the DPO. I am waiting for him. I heard of the incident. So many reporters called me but I have to get the full details before I can release it to you,” he stated.

Bakin Kogi community of Kaninkon Chiefdom is one of the worst hit by Fulani attacks in Southern Kaduna. Last February, the community reported the destruction of 109 houses in such attacks.
