Abuja, (Nigeria) – The Secretary, Social Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Oladimeji Ali Hassan has said that the Secretariat is committed to broadening its commitment to providing entrepreneurial and skill acquisition with profitable and commercial value to People With Disability (PWD) in the Federal Capital Territory.
Hassan, who gave the indication in Abuja on the occasion of the International Day of Persons Living with Disability, said that the Secretariat is assiduously working towards providing ability in disability in the territory.
He pointed out that there is a nexus between disabilities and poverty as persons with disabilities are often at disadvantage when competing with their able bodied contemporaries.
According to him, “Certain social groups of people with disabilities, such as women, children or older persons, especially in developing countries are extremely in vulnerable position which often times, exclude them from education, employment and many other opportunities required for a better livelihood.”
“It is in fulfilling the above objectives that FCT Administration led by the Minister, Muhammad Musa Bello, is trying to consistently demonstrating its commitment to effective service delivery by providing the necessary critical supports required by the persons with disabilities to give then a lease of life and to set them at par with their able bodied peers at work and in the society”
Hassan also revealed that FCT Administration is presently taking additional steps to reinforce the battle against the problem of discrimination of people living with disabilities in the FCT, saying this constitutes one of the challenges people with disabilities are facing in the society.
At the ceremony, the Secretariat presented some gifts to over 20 persons living with disabilities in the territory ranging from wheel bicycles to walking sticks ,among others.
