Kaduna (Nigeria)–The Unified Nigeria Youth Forum, UNYF, has condemned in strong terms campaigns  for the scraping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the Nigeria Police Force.

Abdulsalam Mohammed Kazeem, UNYF President, in a statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna, northern Nigeria Wednesday, said, “Those calling for the abolishment of SARS should book a date with history and have a critical look inward on the role Special Anti-robbery Squad is playing in reducing crime rate to the bearest minimum nationwide.

“No security agency in Nigeria today that is 100% perfect, and as such, we must bear with them on their short comings, the problem of their imperfection can be attributed to bad training and selection process.

“There is also the problem of training and re-training of personnel, lack of adequate man-power, lack of adequate logistic and better welfare package for its personnel.

“The Unified Nigerian Youth Forum calls on all progressive minded citizens and Civil Society Organizations to rather pressurize the present administration to either sack all security chiefs or give them ultimatum on when to bring all these security challenges to a logical conclusion.

“It is on record that in the past administration under President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, we were confronted with severe bombing under the coordination of Boko Haram. Today the country under the leadership of General Mohammadu Buhari of all Progressive Congress, APC, is witnessing sporadic cases of continuous kidnappings of innocent citizens and herdsmen attacking communities with the sole aim of destroying lives and properties in Adamawa, Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Kaduna and Nassarawa States.

“What have the securities chiefs done to curb these series of security threat to our national unity? Population must never be seen or use as an excuse for their inability to protect the lives and properties of their citizenry.

“Holistically, what we need as a nation is a complete restructuring of our security system and as a forum, we appeal to all Nigerians to join our campaign for the agitation of a vibrant and viable security system that can find a lasting solution to the present security challenges we find ourselves as a nation not calling for the scraping of the Special Anti-robbery Squared, SARS.”it argued.
