Nigeria: Two Kaduna Lawmakers Narrowly Escape Beating Over Teachers Sack

Kaduna (Nigeria) — Two members of the Kaduna State House of Assembly Wednesday narrowly escaped beating by angry protesters who stormed Lugard Hall Complex to register their grievances over the sacking of over 22,000 Primary school Teachers by Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The protesters which include NLC, NUT, NULGE and TUC among others who were there in solidarity was overtaken by alleged unknown thugs who stormed the Complex attacking two Members who were to receive and address them.

The members who were in the Lugual hall for the budget harmonization exercise came out from the hall await the arrival of the teachers and the labour party whose were already at the gate but we’re attacked by some of the angry teachers on their arrivals.

The protesters whose include NLC, NUT, NULGE and TUC among others who were there in solidarity alleged to have been overtaken by unknown thugs who stormed the Complex attacking two Members who were to receive and address them.

The teachers who were alleged to be Thugs took advantage of the protest broke some parts of the complex’s glasses and also made attempt to force their way into the offices of the complex to attack other members before the arrival of the NLC officials who put the situation under control.

The National President of the Nigerian Labour Congress Ayuba Wabba led the protest with most of them carrying placards with various inscriptions on it describing their disagreement towards the disengagement of the teachers from service.

Mr. Wabba said they have brought their complain to the honourable Members to make it known to them that they are against the sack of Local Government Workers as well as teachers.

“We are against his policy’ , and we want the members of the state Assembly to address this issue…  whether they are here or not, this is where we have our representatives and we have laid a formal complain as we know the Speaker, majority leader and deputy speaker are aware of this. ” He said.

Ayuba called on the honourable members to act fast on this issue as that is the agreed decision of the Union.

Some teachers who spoke to press men expressed their anger towards this issue and also said that some deceased names appeared on the list released as well as those who did not sit for the competency test alongside retirees, whereas those who sat for the test were said to have failed, they also alleged owing salaries of months without being paid.

Others teachers who also talk on the issue demanded that Governor El_Rufai should made the exam scripts public and assured that any teacher that find out to have failed, would quietly accept his or her disengagement letter and leave.

The protest which started from the NLC office was led to the state Assembly and have proceeded to Government House.
