Court Grants Luka Binniyat, A Nigerian Journalist Stringent Bail Condition [Updated]

Luka Binniyat, a Kaduna based Journalist in northern Nigeria, was on Thursday granted bail by a Kaduna High Court over alleged false publication brought against him by the Kaduna State government.

Presided by Justice Bashir Sukola, Mr. Binniyat was remanded in prison since Wednesday, 12th July, 2017, was given stringent bail conditions.

Justice Bashir Sukola while reading the bail conditions, said two sureties are to deposit their international passports with the court, N10m each and a bank bond to that effect to the amount of money pending the duration of the case.

He however adjourned the case till Thursday,  31st August,  2017.

Reacting to bail, the leading counsel to the accused, Alex Marama, expressed shock with the conditions given and assured that they were going to appeal demanding for the reduction of the bail conditions.

appearance having sustained injuries from an accident.

The Kaduna State government had dragged the Journalist to court on two count charges over publication in Vanguard Newspaper of alleged killings of five students of College of Education Gidan-Waya published on 22nd January, 2017.

The Journalist is been charged of breach of public peace and injurious falsehood punishable under sections 114 and 393 of the penal code laws of Kaduna State.

Mr. Binniyat could not meet the bail condition, and had to be taken back to prison custody.
