Gombe (Nigeria) — Tangale Community Development Association (TCDA) in Northeast Nigeria has urged Gombe State government to demarcate traditional boundary lines identified, re-established and codify same to end 30 years of communal clashes between three local government areas in southern part of the state.
President of the Association, Mr. Kastner Telle made the appeal Thursday at a press briefing in Billiri, Gombe State.
He said this would go a long way in bringing an end the annual crisis between Tangale, Shongom and Kaltungo chiefdoms in the state.
“We believe as law abiding citizens that it is the responsibility of Government to do so and our loyalty to the government is unquestionable.
“One thing that is always clear about the crisis is that, it is on the identification of our traditional boundary lines between Kaltungo Chiefdom and Tangale Chiefdom.
“Apart from Kaltungo Chiefdom, we share boundary lines with Akko LGA in Gombe State and Alkaleri LGA in Bauchi State, there has never been crisis between us,” he said.
According to him, 30 houses and property worth millions of naira were destroyed during the recent attack.
“Adequate compensation for the Internally Displace Persons (IDPs) and victims of the attacks should be imposed on both Shongom and Kaltungo chiefdom from their purse to avoid further occurrence, to serve as deterrent,” he stated.
He called for urgent disarmament of Shongom and Kaltungo people of all weapons and prohibition of hunting on all the traditional boundary lines, as was accepted by the state security committee meeting of July 8, 2016.
“We believe that we are only reminding government of its responsibility because all these are its primary function, there is need to bring this crisis to an end now,” he stated.
