Kaduna (Nigeria) — Police in Nigeria has confirmed the killing of a woman on transit in Jere village, along Kaduna-Abuja express way, by Operative of Department of State Security (DSS).
The incident occurred Wednesday around 2:15 pm when DSS operatives on patrol attempted to shoot a moving vehicle, but in the process shot at the woman in another vehicle. The woman along side her five children were in a commercial vehicle on their way to Kaduna from Abuja.
Eyewitness say the woman’s corpse was moved from Jere to toll gate near Kaduna city, where the deceased children, other passengers and passersby decided to stage a protest, barricading the road.
Road users and travellers were said to have been stranded for hours, as no movement either ways of entering and going out of Kaduna.
According to the eyewitness, one Sufiyanu who spoke with journalists through phone, “We actually don’t know what happened, but we only saw the DSS operatives about 6 of them arriving in two hilux vehicle. Immediately they saw a vehicle coming they tried to stop the driver, but he refused to stop, so they shot at the vehicle.
“Unfortunately they missed their targets and hit at the commercial vehicle conveying the victim (the woman) and her five children. She died on the spot. This angered motorists that witnessed the incidence as they block the high way.
“It took the intervention of police commissioner to plead with the motorists to pave way for other vehicles plying the highway but the angry motorist insist the Governor must visit the scene before they open the road.
“They hit the windscreen of any vehicle that attempted to pass,” he stated.
The State Commissioner of Police Adamu Ibrahim confirmed the incident, adding that the DSS suspect have been arrested by the police and called for order and calmness.
According to him, investigation is ongoing to ascertain the situation.
As at the time of filing this report the identities of the DSS operatives involved in the case are yet to be ascertained.
