Man Arraigned In Court For Raping Six Year Old

imageKaduna (Nigeria) — A twenty-four-year old man has been arraigned before a Kaduna High Court, in northern Nigeria Thursday for allegedly raping a six year old child.

The suspect, Haruna Tukur, had on 5th of February 2016, raped the minor in an uncompleted building in Malali area of Kaduna State capital.

Reading out the charges to the accused, Justice Muhammed Tukur Muazu, noted that the nature of the crime allegedly committed by the suspect is punishable under section 283 of the penal code of Kaduna State.

According to him, the section of the penal code states that the suspect will be liable to imprisonment for life or a lighter sentence if found guilty of the crime.

He also charged the prosecuting counsel to establish the case leveled against the suspect beyond all reasonable doubt.

While responding to the accusation leveled against him, the suspect pleaded not guilty.

The prosecuting counsel, Bayero Dari prayed the court to grant an adjournment to enable hearing of witnesses to proof the charges.

Responding to questions from Journalist, Dari said prosecution of the suspect is a good sign in an efforts to curb the rampant incidents of rape which could serve as a deterrent to others.

The case has been adjourned till 4th August, 2016.
