Nigeria’s Plateau Trains Women On Entrepreneurship

imageJos (Nigeria) — Plateaus State Government in central Nigeria says it has trained 135 women on vocational and entrepreneurial skills in the last one year.

Plateau Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Rufina Gurumyen, who disclosed this said 75 women were trained on beads making, tailoring, catering, soap-making and knitting, amongst others, while 60 women were trained on entrepreneurial skills.

‘’We conducted these trainings at two of our vocational centres at the Women Multipurpose Centre in Jos North Local Government and the Widowhood Centre at Mangu Local Government.

“We currently have 30 women undergoing training at our multipurpose centre, while 40 are awaiting certification at the Widowhood centre.

She said that the aim was to make the beneficiaries self reliant and reduce the hardship among women, especially widows in training their children.

“The Ministry is also working in partnership with the Jos Business Centre where 60 women were trained on entrepreneurial skills,’’ she commissioner explained,” she said.

Gurumyen added that government could not achieve the campaign against poverty without partnerships with donor agencies and non-governmental organisations for resources and training.

According to her, organisations like the Ahmadu Bello Foundation was partnering with the state government on training of women and youths on food processing and preservation.
