Kaduna (Nigeria) – The PEN Africa Network (PAN) has asked the Gambian President, Yahaya Jameh to facilitate the release of Aboulle Cessay, a Gambian radio Journalist, who has been in the custody of the security agents for over a week.
The group which protests the continued secret confinement of the journalist urged the president to investigate into the actions of the security agents.
Their position was made known in a statement by Secretary-General of the group, Dr Frankie Asare-Donkoh.
The statement says, “PEN is deeply concerned about the whereabouts of Aboulle Cessay who is the manager of the independent radio station Taranga FM who was abducted by Gambian security agents on July 17, barely four days after he had been released from captivity on July 13, 2015.
“We are further concerned that Cessay is been held purely in relation to his journalistic practice, which is in serious violation of his freedom of expression protected under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights.”
“Accordingly, we call on the Gambian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release Alagie Aboulle Cessay,” the statement added.
