Gov Simon Lalong of Plateau, North Central Nigeria, on Thursday upgraded two chiefdoms in Jos South Local Government Area “in fulfilment of the people’s desire”.

The governor presented the staff of office to Gwom Rwey of Gyel, Da Nga Dangyang who was upgraded to a second class ruler, while Gwom Rwey of Zawan, Da Christopher Mancha to third class.

Speaking while performing the ceremony at the Jos South Local Government Secretariat , Lalong said the event was a fulfillment of the people’s desires for the establishment of their chiefdoms.

“The people of Gyel and Zawan today can attest to the fact that when I made that promise, it was not for campaign purposes but because of my genuine love to take governance to the grassroots.

“And also to ensure that all people in the state are liberated,“ he said.

He said that his administration since inception in office made reviving traditional Institution one of its priorities to strengthen it and contribute meaningfully in the developmental strides of the government.

He added that the action was to engender social cohesion and promote peaceful coexistence among Plateau people.

“Consequently, we created 285 districts, restored two First Class; six second class; and 10 third class chiefdoms across the state,” he said.

He said that the ceremony was a wake up call to other communities particularly those still prolonging the process of selecting theirs to make deliberate efforts of reaching a decision for their progress.

He urged the installed traditional rulers to adopt inclusiveness in their rulership and charged them to ensure that maintaining peace and security within their domains was their major priority in the discharge of their duties.

“I admonish you all to be more proactive, and carry your people along irrespective of creed, religion or any affiliation.

“Also avoid tendencies that will make you use your selfish or sectional interest or any negative action that could jeopardise the sanctity of the revered stool which you are occupying in trust for your people, “ he said.

The governor also appealed to traditional leaders to advise their subjects especially the youths to desist from blocking roads in protest or expression of grievances saying that the act was tarnishing the image of Plateau which is known for its hospitality.

He urged the members of the two communities to cooperate with their rulers to enable them succeed in their duties.

Earlier in his remarks, the chairman of Jos South local government, Mr Gideon Dandereng, commended Lalong for elevating the rulers and for his leadership style which has fostered peace and unity.

Responding, the Gwom Rwey Gyel thanked Lalong for making the upgrade a reality and assured him that they would discharge their duties diligently.(NAN)
