Kenya Taxpayers Rush iTax Portal As KRA Maintains June 30 Deadline

Date:

Kenya is witnessing a surge in online tax filings as thousands of taxpayers rush to submit their annual returns ahead of the June 30 deadline, with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) maintaining that there will be no extension.

The spike in activity has placed significant pressure on the iTax portal, as individuals, salaried workers, and businesses attempt to complete filing requirements for the 2025 income year before the statutory cutoff.

KRA has reiterated that the deadline remains firm under Kenyan tax regulations, warning that late submissions will attract penalties and interest charges. The authority has also urged taxpayers to avoid last-minute filing in order to reduce congestion on its digital systems.

The annual rush has become a recurring feature of Kenya’s tax calendar, with many taxpayers delaying submissions until the final days, often resulting in system slowdowns and access challenges on the iTax platform.

Tax experts say the pattern reflects ongoing gaps in tax compliance planning and digital literacy, despite improvements in the online filing system and sustained awareness campaigns by the revenue authority.

Businesses and salaried individuals are among those most affected by the deadline pressure, as failure to file on time automatically triggers penalties under Kenya’s tax procedures law.

KRA has previously noted that while the iTax system remains stable, it experiences predictable peak traffic during the final days of the filing season, and has consistently advised early submission to avoid disruptions.
