Governor of Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria, Nasir El-Rufai has urged Nigerian journalists to uphold the ethical values of the pen profession.

“The power of Media to the development of any society cannot be over emphasized, hence the need for Journalists to be objective in their reportage” he emphasised.

The Governor who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Samuel Aruwan made the assertion while declaring open the Secretariat and launching of the Compendium of Kaduna NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel on Friday.

On the issue of clampdown on Journalists in Kaduna State, the Media aide to the governor said that such has never happened and assuring that such would never happen.

“But for the fact that we are journalists does not mean that we have immunity and therefore we must separate bigotry, sentiments, self – assumption from our reportage,” the governor advised.

In a remark, the Chairman of Kaduna NUJ, Adamu Yusuf said that Correspondent Chapel is the heart beat of the State Council of NUJ emphasising that it comprises of all Media Representatives nationally and internationally covering the activities in the state.

“We must commend the efforts of the Executive Members of this Chapel for launching its compendium, the full names and pictures of their members will complement the efforts of the state and the national body of NUJ to fish out quacks among us and that will also help to sanitize the system”, he said.

He also advised members of the noble profession to always strive to show ultimate allegiance to citizens, put the public interest and truth above their self

“Few of the obligations of journalism if I am to remind you are: truth, objectivity, balance and social responsibility to the state, country and the world in general”, Mr. Yusuf re-echoed.

Earlier, Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel, Midat Joseph in his opening remarks assured the public of the Correspondents Chapel’s readiness to partner with established lawful agencies in Kaduna State, saying that they are the news makers of the society.
