Nigeria: EFCC Recovers Over 266 Million Naira, Convicts 10 Persons

Gombe (Nigeria) – Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Gombe zonal office northeast of the country, said it has recovered over 266 million Naira from Politicians and individuals.

It also convicted 10 persons out 26 charged to court between January and December 2017.

The New Head of Operations of the Commission, Johnson Babalola disclosed this during an interaction with Journalists in Gombe on Thursday.

He asked for the support of journalists in the fighting against corruption saying that this year, the commission has convicted two people out of 6 persons charged to court.

He said that the anti-graft Agency recorded 256 cases and rejected 68  which are civil cases, 88 were under investigations while 59 are also being reviewed by the legal section of the commission.

“We have made some new discoveries on the diversion of 2015 Peoples Democratic Party campaign funds towards the building of filling stations and hotels and we made them to forfeit to the Federal Government.”

Babalola said 1200 bag of cement meant for Internally Displaced Persons allegedly diverted were also recovered adding that three suspects would charge to court.

He  said the EFCC is not only concerned  with ridding the society of economic and financial crimes by sending criminals to jail, but also preventing the commission of crimes.

Babalola attributed the successes of the anti-graft agency in recent times to the efforts of the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Mustapha Magu, “whose tough stance has been applauded nationally and internationally.”
