Gombe (Nigeria) — As part of the efforts at keeping Nigeria One, as against the backdrop of ethnic agitations calling for disintegration, security agencies in Gombe, northeast part of the country have conducted a rally in support of united Nigeria.
The security agencies comprising of the army, police, custom, immigration, civil defence, Department of State Security Service and the Federal Road Safety Corps, marched through a section of Gombe metropolis Wednesday, before bringing the exercise to an end at the Gombe Stadium, where the rally took place.
Speaking during the rally,the State Commissioner of Police, Austin Iwar, said the walk for unity by the joint security operatives was to demonstrate the unity of the country.
He declared that security agencies in the state strongly believe in the continued existence of Nigeria as a united entity while reaffirming their commitment to defend the country against any infraction.
CP Iwar urged men of the various security agencies to ensure unity among the different sister agencies, adding that the rally to demonstrate unity of the country as well as unity among the different security agencies, would be replicated every three months.
Also in his remark Commandant of the 301 Artillery Regiment Operation Lafiya Dole in the state, Lt. Col Dan-umar Bello Suleiman said the rally was to foster unity and cooperation among officers and men of various security agencies.
According to him, “We can’t be fighting insurgency and fighting ourselves.”
An official of the State Security Services said the rally was also a power show to demonstrate to criminals to be aware of the high security arrangement in the state.
The unity rally commenced from the Gombe stadium to pass through the city centre before winding up at the stadium, with heads of the various security agencies and men covering a distance of over 5km.
