Family Health Advocates in Nigeria Initiative (FHANI) warmly commends the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, His Excellency Senator Uba Sani, for his demonstrated commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of the people of Kaduna State.
The Governor’s commitment of ₦2 billion toward the procurement of child birth spacing commodities and consumables under the UNFPA matching grant initiative, alongside the commitment of ₦6 billion for the revitalisation of 82 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Kaduna State, represents a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to strengthen its health system and improve access to quality healthcare.
These commitments are more than financial allocations. They are investments in the lives, dignity and future of the people of Kaduna State.
A Bold Commitment to child birth spacing.
FHANI particularly applauds the Governor for recognising child birth spacing as a critical component of the state’s health and development agenda.
Access to affordable, quality and voluntary child birth spacing enables women and couples to make informed decisions about the timing and spacing of pregnancies. It contributes to healthier mothers and children, reduces unintended pregnancies and can help reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths.
The ₦2 billion commitment is therefore a strategic investment in the health of women, girls, families and communities. It also demonstrates Kaduna State’s willingness to complement partner resources with domestic financing.
This is especially important at a time when global health financing is under pressure. UNFPA has highlighted the importance of increased domestic investment in contraceptive and reproductive, maternal and newborn health commodities, with matching mechanisms designed to leverage government contributions.
Kaduna State’s launch of its Family Planning Strategic Plan 2026–2030 and Costed Implementation Plan further demonstrates that the state is moving towards a more deliberate, coordinated and sustainable approach to family planning programming.
₦6 Billion for 82 PHCs: Taking Healthcare Closer to the People
FHANI also recognises the Governor’s commitment of ₦6 billion to revitalise 82 PHCs across the state as a major step towards strengthening primary healthcare.
Primary healthcare is the first point of contact between citizens and the health system. For women seeking antenatal care, mothers seeking immunisation services, families requiring child birth spacing, children needing treatment and communities requiring preventive healthcare, a functional PHC can make the difference between timely care and avoidable complications.
The planned revitalisation of 82 PHCs therefore has the potential to improve infrastructure, equipment, service delivery and the overall experience of citizens seeking care.
This commitment is particularly significant because the success of PHC revitalisation should ultimately be measured not only by renovated buildings but by whether citizens experience better, more accessible, affordable and quality healthcare services. This is consistent with the broader national PHC revitalisation agenda.
A Broader Transformation of Kaduna’s Health Sector
The two commitments should also be viewed within the broader trajectory of health-sector reforms under the Uba Sani administration.
Recent assessments of Kaduna’s health-sector direction have highlighted progress around primary healthcare revitalisation, emergency services, maternal healthcare, disease surveillance, digital health innovation and sustained public-health investment.
The administration has also taken steps to expand healthcare access for vulnerable populations. In August 2025, the Kaduna State Government announced the enrolment of more than 15,000 vulnerable persons into the state’s health insurance system, an important step towards financial protection and universal health coverage.
These efforts demonstrate an understanding that improving health outcomes requires more than hospitals and medicines. It requires investment in primary healthcare, health financing, human resources, commodities, infrastructure, health insurance and community-level access to services.
Leadership That Understands the Value of Prevention
FHANI believes one of the most commendable aspects of these commitments is the emphasis on prevention.
Investing in child birth spacing can prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the health risks associated with closely spaced pregnancies. Investing in PHCs ensures that essential preventive and curative services are available closer to where people live.
This is the kind of investment that may not always attract the same attention as large infrastructure projects, but its impact can be felt in thousands of households.
Every woman who can access her preferred child birth spacing method, every mother who receives timely antenatal care, every child who receives immunisation and every family that receives quality healthcare within reasonable distance represents a direct return on these investments.
A Governor with a Big Heart
For FHANI, the phrase “a Governor with a big heart” is not simply a political compliment. It reflects an appreciation of leadership that places human lives at the centre of development.
The people of Kaduna State need leadership that listens to their concerns, responds to their needs and makes investments that improve their quality of life. The recent commitments in child birth spacing and primary healthcare are evidence of such responsiveness.
FHANI therefore appreciates His Excellency Senator Uba Sani for demonstrating political commitment to health and for recognising that healthy families are the foundation of a prosperous Kaduna State.
We equally commend the Kaduna State Ministry of Health, the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board and other relevant government institutions for their roles in translating the Governor’s vision into practical health-sector interventions.
Our Call for Sustainability and Accountability
While celebrating these milestones, FHANI believes that the greatest success will come when these commitments are fully translated into services that citizens can see and experience.
We therefore encourage the Kaduna State Government to ensure:
Timely release and utilisation of the ₦2 billion child birth spacing commitment.
Transparent procurement and distribution of family planning commodities and consumables.
Equitable distribution of commodities across all Local Government Areas.
Effective implementation of the 82 PHC revitalisation projects.
Provision of essential equipment, medicines, water, electricity and other basic infrastructure at revitalised PHCs.
Adequate staffing and continuous capacity building for healthcare workers.
Meaningful involvement of communities and Ward Development Committees in monitoring PHC performance.
Regular tracking and public reporting of progress and results.
Civil society organisations such as FHANI stand ready to work constructively with government and development partners to support accountability, community engagement, evidence generation and effective implementation.
A Milestone Worth Celebrating
FHANI joins citizens across Kaduna State in appreciating His Excellency Senator Uba Sani for these landmark commitments.
The ₦2 billion family planning investment and ₦6 billion PHC revitalisation commitment represent a combined ₦8 billion investment in the health and wellbeing of Kaduna citizens.
For mothers.
For children.
For young people.
For families.
For communities.
And for the future of Kaduna State.
This is leadership that deserves recognition.
FHANI congratulates His Excellency, Senator Uba Sani, and the Kaduna State Government on these important milestones and urges continued investment in health as a cornerstone of human capital development and sustainable development in Kaduna State.
Indeed, Kaduna deserves a healthy population, and a governor with a big heart is helping to make that vision a reality.
