The EduMedia Climate Reform on Health Initiative (e-MICH) has expressed deep concern over the heightened risk of flooding in parts of Kaduna State following persistent rainfall and forecasts of continued heavy downpours.
Flood-prone communities identified include Abubakar Kigo Road in Kaduna North Local Government Area, Barnawa in Kaduna South Local Government Area, Karatudu, Narayi and Sabon Tasha in Chikun as well as other Local Government Areas where residents are advised to remain vigilant and take immediate precautionary measures to safeguard lives and property.
A statement by the organisation’s Communication Officer, Dr. Hadiza Abdullahi said flooding is not only a humanitarian challenge but also a major public health threat. “Floodwaters often contaminate sources of drinking water, increasing the risk of cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.
“Stagnant water left behind by floods also provides breeding sites for mosquitoes, leading to increased cases of malaria. In addition, flooding can disrupt access to healthcare services, particularly for pregnant women, nursing mothers, children under five, older persons and persons living with disabilities.
“e-MICH therefore calls on residents to avoid dumping refuse in drainage channels, clear blocked drains around their homes and communities, relocate from high-risk areas where necessary, avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, and ensure that drinking water is properly treated or boiled before use.
“The organisation also advises families to seek immediate medical attention if anyone develops symptoms of diarrhoea, persistent fever or other illnesses associated with flood-related contamination.
“As an organisation committed to advancing the intersection of climate action, health and community resilience, e-MICH calls on the Kaduna State Government, emergency management agencies, local government councils, community leaders, civil society organisations and the media to intensify flood awareness campaigns, strengthen emergency preparedness, improve drainage infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted access to essential healthcare services in vulnerable communities.
“Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official weather and emergency advisories and to promptly report flooding incidents to the appropriate authorities.
“Collective preparedness, environmental responsibility and timely action remain the most effective means of reducing the devastating impact of floods on communities and protecting public health”, the statement ends.
