Nigeria’s Insecurity: Middle Belt Forum, Hausa Communities Plan Summit

Date:

The Middle Belt Forum, MBF, says it is working with stakeholders from Hausa communities to convene a security and political summit aimed at addressing rising insecurity and strengthening cooperation across northern Nigeria.

In a statement made available to Africa Prime News, MBF National Spokesman, Luka Binniyat, said the planned summit would be held before the 2027 general elections following extensive consultations between stakeholders from the Middle Belt and Hausa communities.

According to the forum, the summit is expected to provide a platform for discussions on insecurity, political cooperation and the shared socio-political future of northern Nigeria.

“The time has come for greater cooperation between Hausa Land and the Middle Belt, who undeniably form the majority of the population of northern Nigeria,” the statement said.

MBF said the summit would seek to build consensus on issues affecting both regions and foster an alliance capable of addressing common security and developmental challenges.

The forum also expressed support for recent comments by the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Muhammad Samaila Mera, who called on communities in his emirate to become more organised in the face of growing terrorism, banditry and kidnapping.
“We understand his frustration, fears and determination to protect his people from the insecurity that continues to devastate many communities across Hausa Land and the Middle Belt,” the statement added.

The forum noted that communities across the Middle Belt have suffered significant human and economic losses from the activities of Boko Haram, ISWAP, bandits and other armed groups.
According to the statement, the intervention by the Emir of Argungu should serve as a wake-up call for traditional rulers across the Middle Belt to take a more active interest in lawful community safety initiatives.

MBF commended the emir for what it described as his courage and concern for the welfare of his people.

The forum further said it had taken note of increasing calls among Hausa communities for justice, security and greater participation in shaping their political and economic future.
“The over 200 ethnic nationalities of the Middle Belt stand in solidarity with all Hausa people who believe in a peaceful, secure, democratic and prosperous Nigeria, where every group enjoys equal rights and opportunities, free from the domination of a minority,” the statement said.

The forum stressed the need for both regions to work together to improve security, promote economic development and build stronger political partnerships.
It also called for dialogue aimed at addressing historical grievances, religious differences and ethnic divisions.
“We must come together to discuss the issues that divide us, seek common ground and develop democratic solutions that will advance our collective interests and strengthen our unity,” the statement added.

MBF said it remains committed to championing discussions that would promote peace, security and cooperation between the Middle Belt and Hausa communities.
