Nigeria: Kaduna Group Lauds Clemency Granted To Inmates, Urges Judiciary To Act.

Date:

KADUNA Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) State Level Support Working Group has lauded the Clemency granted to 97 Inmates by Governor Uba Sani, urging the Chief Judge to Deepen Compliance with ACJL Provisions.

The Group also commends Governor Uba Sani, for the clemency to the inmates in correctional facilities across the state.

This compassionate and commendable action, according to a statement by Dr. Terngu Gwar,
Chairman of the Group, reflects the spirit and objectives of the Kaduna Administration of Criminal Justice Law, which seeks to promote fairness, decongest custodial centres, safeguard human dignity, and ensure that justice is administered efficiently and humanely.
” The Working Group views this development as a positive outcome of its sustained advocacy and stakeholder engagements aimed at achieving the comprehensive implementation of the ACJL in Kaduna State.

” The KADUNA ACJL SLWG has consistently engaged relevant institutions and authorities on the need to strengthen the administration of criminal justice through adherence to the provisions of the law, particularly those relating to prison decongestion, protection of the rights of suspects and defendants, speedy dispensation of justice, and the adoption of non-custodial measures where appropriate.

“While applauding Governor Uba Sani for this important demonstration of responsive leadership and compassion, the Working Group respectfully calls on the Chief Judge of Kaduna State to do more in ensuring full compliance with the provisions of the ACJL.
“In particular, the Chief Judge is urged to intensify periodic jail delivery exercises, review the cases of awaiting-trial inmates, promote effective case management, and encourage judicial practices that minimise unnecessary delays in the determination of criminal cases.

“The Working Group notes that a significant number of inmates remain in custody awaiting trial, with many deserving timely judicial attention as envisaged under the ACJL. A more robust implementation of the law by the judiciary will further reduce congestion in correctional facilities and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.

“The KADUNA ACJL SLWG reiterates its commitment to working collaboratively with the judiciary, the executive, correctional authorities, law enforcement agencies, legal practitioners, civil society organisations, and development partners to advance a criminal justice system that is efficient, accountable, humane, and accessible to all.

“The Group therefore encourages all justice sector stakeholders to sustain the momentum generated by this commendable act of clemency and translate the ideals of the ACJL into concrete actions that guarantee timely and equitable justice for every citizen”, the statement concludes.
