…Reviews Kaduna Climate Change Bill

…..A non profit organisation, Bridge That Gap Initiative (BTG) has intensified efforts in strengthening  climate governance and environmental sustainability through strategic media engagement focused on Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and their relevance to State policies.

The renewed commitment was highlighted on Thursday during the Climate Lens in Kaduna (CLIK) Media Roundtable organised by Bridge That Gap Hope for Africa Initiative (BTG), where stakeholders examined how global environmental agreements can be translated into practical state-level actions.
Presentations at the roundtable centred on “Global Agreements, Local Realities: MEAs and Kaduna State,” with discussions focusing on climate change laws, environmental protection, disaster management, and the role of the media in driving public awareness and accountability.

Gloria Kasang Bulus, the Founder and Executive Director of the Bridge That Gap Initiative (BTG Initiative) at the event stressed that climate change remains a growing threat to livelihoods, public health, agriculture, and infrastructure, warning that inadequate awareness and weak policy implementation could worsen environmental challenges across communities.
Gloria explained that global climate commitments only become effective when reflected in national laws and implemented through State policies and local actions.
The ED identified key areas requiring urgent attention to include climate adaptation, emissions reduction, environmental education, public health protection, and sustainable urban planning.
The roundtable also reviewed Kaduna State’s Climate Change Bill, Environmental Policy, and Disaster Management Policy, highlighting the need for stronger collaboration among government institutions, civil society organisations, development partners, and the media.
According to her, the media plays a critical role in informing citizens, promoting accountability, investigating environmental issues, and amplifying community voices on climate-related concerns.
Challenges identified during the discussions included low public awareness, inadequate funding, weak institutional coordination, and gaps in policy implementation.
The participants further called for stronger alignment between global environmental commitments, national climate laws, and Kaduna State policies to ensure sustainable development and improved resilience against climate-related disasters.
They maintained that community participation and sustained public engagement would remain essential in achieving effective climate governance and environmental protection in Kaduna State.
They are optimism that the roundtable would contribute to more robust climate conversations and policy implementation in Kaduna State.

The roundtable concluded with a renewed call for collective action, urging policymakers, journalists, environmental experts, and citizens to work together towards building a safer, greener, and more climate-resilient Kaduna.

The revamped edition of the Quarterly Media Roundtable, now renamed Climate Lens in Kaduna (CLIK), aimed at deepening discussions on climate justice and environmental sustainability in Kaduna State.

The roundtable focus on exploring global Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), their relevance to Kaduna State, and how such agreements can strengthen existing environmental and climate-related policies in the state.

The initiative is designed to provide a platform for journalists, policymakers, civil society actors and other stakeholders to engage in informed discussions on climate governance, environmental accountability and sustainable development.

The programme has however enhance media understanding of climate justice issues and improve reportage on environmental policies, climate adaptation and international commitments affecting local communities.

The Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MERs) are international treaties established to address environmental challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, desertification and pollution, localising such agreements remains critical to achieving sustainable development goals.

The Climate Lens in Kaduna roundtable would encourage stronger collaboration between the media and relevant institutions in promoting public awareness and policy advocacy on climate action in the state.

The platform aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen climate resilience and ensure that environmental policies are responsive to the needs of vulnerable communities affected by climate change.

BTG reaffirmed its commitment to promoting climate justice, citizen engagement and inclusive environmental governance through strategic dialogue and media partnerships.
