Sunday Isuwa

Sunday Isuwa holds a Master’s Degree in Mass Communication from the Open University of Nigeria, and PGD in Journalism from the International Institute of Journalism, IIJ.

Isuwa joined the Leadership Newspaper in 2007 as Reporter and has served in various positions in the organization, as Correspondent, Ag. Bureau Chief, Assistant News Editor/ Political Correspondent, Abuja and currently Senate Correspondent/ General Reporter.

From 2013 to date, Isuwa remains International Retainer with the New York Times.

He has also acquired various skills including Certificates in Science Communication and Science Journalism, Fact – Checking and Investigative Journalism, Armed Conflict and International Humanitarian Law as well as Certificate in Disaster Management from ASCON, Badagri.

What makes Sunday Isuwa standing tall today, although, naturally small in stature, is the story Titled “Cancer Patients Stranded for Months At National Hospital Over Faulty Machines.”

The story idea came when Isuwa met with One of the patients who was stranded for 4 months after completing the Chemotherapy treatment at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital and referred for further treatment at the National Hospital, Abuja using C T Simulation machine.

Isuwa followed up the story at the National Hospital and found that many patients were stranded, a place that was supposed to be a model for the Nigerian Health Sector.

As a Development Journalist, Isuwa filed the First Report, but the Hospital Management denied it, resulting in threats and blackmail against the Journalist.

Ignoring the consequences, Isuwa continued and got access to the Simulation Room where he saw the equipment with a blank screen and not working.
He then filed the Second Report titled ” Despite Denial, National Hospital Cancer Treatment Machine Not Working” which drew the much-needed attention, and the equipment was finally fixed.

An SMS was then sent to the patients by the Hospital Management calling on them to come because, Quote “The CT Machine Is Now Working” Unquote.

Isuwa got the wind, went and checked and it was working.

He then filed another Report titled “After Leadership Reports , National Hospital Fixes Cancer Treatment Machine.”

The number of casualties of cancer would have been more, if these reports which forced the Management of the National Hospital to act, were not published.

Isuwa who has won “Leadership Best Reporter of the Month Award” several times, has courageously demonstrated the best practice in Journalism, hence you are being acknowledged as the First Runner Up in the AMDF 2022 Journalist of the contest.
You are therefore presented with a Certificate of Commendation.
CONGRATULATIONS.
