Government and private organisations have been advised to design programmes aimed at enhancing productivity with the involvement of labour.

The lecturer , Dr. Nasiru Inuwa of  the Department of Economics Gombe State University, gave the suggestion in a paper  with the theme ” Productivity for Economic Recovery and Sustainable Growth” to mark the 2018 Productivity Day celebration in Gombe, Northeast of the country.

Dr. Inuwa decried  the low productivity level of Nigeria in relation to countries that have less human and material resources and as such effective supervision should be adopted to improve the productivity of frontline staff and others at all levels.

He suggested that investment in human development and technical modernization was needed for sufficient and effective methods of improving workers’ productivity.

The lecturer  said that the system should learn to take proper interest in workers to improve their productivity, such that their needs and aspirations should be known..

Dr. Inuwa also urged employers to provide good working conditions for workers, such as the replacement of ineffective and obsolete technologies, replacement of equipment in poor condition, good payment system and incentives, job satisfaction, good retirement packages and the provision of appropriate technical manpower and instructions.

On his part, the State Governor,  Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, said the government had taken some bold steps since 2011 in its development strides ,  which are aimed at achieving efficient and effective service delivery for the benefit of the people.

Governor Dankwambo said the government embarked on massive investments on socio-economic and infrastructural development projects.

“Almost all the sectors received the needed attention, especially education, infrastructure, youth and women empowerment and  poverty alleviation in addition to providing the needed inputs and equipment for agricultural, health and security infrastructure.

These efforts  made Gombe State to stand out amongst its peers in the region and the country,” Governor Dankwambo said.

He encouraged those yet to receive the award  to regard the award as a motivation,  and challenged them to put in their best, so that by next year they would be among those to be rewarded.

Also speaking,  the State Head of Service, Haruna Abubakar, said a civil servant is expected to be honest and transparent in the implementation of the ever expanding task of government.

“Civil Servant and Political Office holders are expected to imbibe the ethics, values and norms of public service which include discipline, honest, hard work, loyalty, integrity, accountability, transparency, courtesy, respect, confidentiality, neutrality and decency to guide their actions in the management of government’s limited resources prudently and transparently towards the attainment of set goals and objectives. But the unfortunate prevailing trend,  is that most of the civil servants have derailed from these ethics and values of the service,” Abubakar said

The event, which was organized by the State Government in collaboration with the Federal Government, awarded 20 workers from both the public and private sectors for their dedication and efficient service delivery in their respective organizations.

They include three from local governments, one from corporate organisations, one from school and 13 from the state civil service.
