Germany’s Southern State of Bavaria wants to set up its own border Police Force and Asylum Office, its new cabinet announced after their first meeting on Friday in Munich.

Bavarian Premier Markus Soeder said there would be around 1,000 positions in the border police and that they could even carry out border checks independently.

The change is subject to federal approval.

At present the German federal police force is responsible for border controls but is assisted by Bavarian state police officers.

The Bavarian asylum office would also have 1,000 employees, but would not be able to make asylum decisions these would continue to be made at the federal level.

Instead, its focus would be to speed up the deportation of rejected asylum applicants.

Bavaria bore the brunt of the influx of refugees arriving in Germany in 2015 and 2016 due to its location on the southern border, often causing conflict between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the previous Bavarian premier Horst Seehofer.

Seehofer is Germany’s new interior minister and has vowed to focus on security and a strict migration policy.
