Gusau (Nigeria) – Zamfara State Governor, Abdul’Aziz Yari Abubakar has said that legislatures in state and national assemblies should be entitled to pension like the executive and the judiciary arms of government.
Yari who was speaking at Government House Gusau at a dinner organized for members of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria to round up their conference said the demand was meant to make legislators have confidence in the system.
Yari contended that since the legislature is the second arm of government, it is proper if members too are being paid pension and not only severance allowances as currently being done in the country.
“The executives are paid pensions after their tenures, the judiciary are paid pensions after retirement, then why is the legislatures not paid pensions,” he asked.
The governor who is a former member of the House of Representatives representing Anka/Talata Mafara federal constituency, charged legislators at the states and national assemblies to pass a legislation that would enable them get pensions after leaving the legislature.
“Paying pensions to legislators is one of the surest way ensuring equity in governance. If there is transparency in government, this my suggestion can be done easily without any hitch,” he said.
The dinner rounded up the two-day Conference of the Speakers of State Legislatures held in Gusau the Zamfara capital.
