Nigeria: Northern Groups Dissappointed Over United Nations Position On Ethnic Tensions

Date:

By Amos Tauna

The Coalition of Northern Groups, CNG, have described the alleged circulated report of condemnations by some organs of the United Nations, UN, as very disappointing, inconsistent and biased.

“CNG is disappointed by the reported UN utterances which tend to blame the northern Nigerian people solely for the set of conflicts brought about by the  IPOB’s brand of agitation for Biafra,” Abdul Azeez Suleiman,  spokesperson of CNG , said in a statement.

The statement made available to newsmen in Kaduna on Tuesday said, “Up till this moment, the UN has not disowned the remarks which are credited to certain organs of the global body thereby creating the impression that iit has endorsed them.

“That the UN observation was released months after the Kaduna Declaration and  days after the relocation clause in the Declaration was publicly vacated amounts to malice afterthought and makes it curious.

“More curious is that the UN overlooked the subsisting quit order to the Hausa/Fulani and the Yoruba by the Niger Delta militants opting to single out the north for condemnation.

“It is worrying that  the UN deliberately refused to consider and act on the earlier CNG petition to it on the unfolding developments in Nigeria.

“A similar communication was also addressed to the major foreign diplomatic missions represented in Nigeria, in which we  drew attention to the emerging trends in the country that are pregnant with complications and unforeseen consequences.

“In all those representation, we raised vital issues aimed to forestall the drift toward anarchy and bloodshed in Nigeria, and also to alert the international community as to where responsibility would ultimately lie if such momentous and terrible events ever came to pass.”

The groups noted that with the apparent biased attitude of the UN in favour of the Biafran Igbo against the North shows of decent patriotism and love for our country and fellow citizens, adding, “Unless retracted, will leave us no option than to draw inevitable conclusions that the resurgence of separatist agitations especially by the IPOB and its ilk in the South-East represent a much wider conspiracy to divide Nigeria and bring the North down on its knees by incapacitation and balkanization.

“That the current agitations and disturbances that have been ongoing ceaselessly since the coming to power of the Mumammadu Buhari and Yemi Osinbajo administration in 2015, have a foreign backing aimed at rendering the country practically ungovernable, and ushering in of anarchy and instability thereby occasioning a change of government by whatever means and tactics.

“That the general and pervasive insecurity that is being experienced across the country which are symptoms of the disquiet in the country that has been exacerbated by political opportunism and corruption also enjoy some level of foreign incitement.

“That all these have the potential of forcing the north and the upcoming generations of Nigerians to lose confidence and trust in the disposition of the UN to ensure and oversee a safe and balanced global future.”
