Abuja (Nigeria) – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has protested against the decision of the Nigerian Government to scrap the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), saying, its cancellation portends a serious threat to the quality of education in the country.

ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who stated this in Abuja on Monday said, the Government did not consult the union on the matter and the decision undermined the autonomy and powers of universities’ Senate as the highest policy-making body on academic matters, particularly admission of students and award of degrees.

“The argument of Federal Government on the policy is unacceptable and potentially harmful to the future of Nigerian’s education system. We call on the government to rescind its decision and convene a genuine stakeholders’ meeting on the issue before making any policy statement,” the Union noted.
