As the world celebrates International Environment Day, refineries and industries, especially in Africa, have been reminded on the importance of annual tree planting Campaign to compliment Government, NGO & CSOs fight against Climate change, desertification, and other forms of environmental challenges.
Dr Piman Hoffman of African Climate Reporters, made the appeal to mark this year’s Environment Day with the theme ”Beat Air pollution”
He said the participation of all refineries in tree planting campaign would help in reducing the large quantity of emission in the atmosphere affecting lives of both human and animals.
He added that there is the need for All African countries to enact a law aimed at tracking emission from refineries, textile companies and industries
Dr Hoffman stressed the need for the African Union to encourage industries and companies in participating in all projects relating to tree planting campaigns in African and to support the project of Great Green World, GGW
It was reported that Every year, approximately seven million people die prematurely due to air pollution and Around four million deaths occur in Asia-Pacific.
Hoffman say Air pollution is number one African silent killer that keeps claiming lives of citizens
He listed 6 common pollutants apart from the release of emission from companies and industries which include ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, lead, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter.
“It must be noted that, world Environment Day is a campaign established to bring some positive environmental changes all over the world to make life better and more natural. Environmental issues are big issues now-a-days to which everyone must be aware and give their positive efforts to solve such issues.
“The world has already begun to see the repercussions of climate change through increases in natural disasters, extreme weather events, and shifting ecosystem characteristics
“African climate reporters therefore called on every stake holders to support in raising awareness as the world celebrate environment day today”, Hoffman said.
